What if she was your?

The war that Israel has been waging against the unarmed Palestinian nation over the past months (barely reported in the European media) is now down to statistics – the countless dead – countless wounded – and countless missing, buried under the rubble, are so great that they no longer register.

Last month I read of a six-year-old girl travelling in a car with her aunt, her uncle and three cousins, they were fleeing, trying to find safety, in a land where there is none.

Today we read:-

The body of a six-year-old Palestinian girl, missing for 12 days after an Israeli tank targeted their family car in Gaza, has been found along with the bodies of two medics dispatched to look for them.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the family of the girl, Hind Rajab, confirmed on Saturday that all seven people inside the car were killed, with the Palestinian relief organisation saying it lost crew members Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun in the Israeli attack on civilians in GazaCity.

The car came face to face with an Israeli tank, whose occupants opened fire on the car killing all inside apart that is for the little six-year-old who was hiding amongst the dead bodies of her dead relatives.

Audio recordings of a call between the girl and emergency call operators suggest the six-year-old was the only survivor – her pleas for someone to rescue her ended when the phone line cut amid the sound of gunfire. The Kia car when found was riddled with bullet holes the windscreen and dashboard smashed to pieces.  

A Paramedic later told journalists that the little girl Hind Rajab was the only one alive amongst the six other bodies found in the car. Only metres away the remains of a burnt-out ambulance of the Red Crescent sent to fetch the Hind girl to safety. Yusuf al_Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun who crewed the ambulance that day died in the ambulance that had been bombed by Israeli forces.

A report by the PRCS accused Israel of deliberately targeting the ambulance, just as soon as it arrived at the scene on 29 January.

In an interview with the BBC, the PRCS told them it takes several hours to coordinate access with the Israeli army, given the green light to send paramedics,

“We got the coordination; we got the green light,”

Nibal Farsakh went on – “On arrival (the crew) confirmed that they could see the car where Hind Rajab was trapped and they could see her. The last thing we heard was continuous gunfire.”

The Israel army (who lie with impunity) would only say

Hamas often used ambulances to transport its weapons and fighters

No longer will statistics overwhelm us – not the fog of war – but the targeting of a family fleeing to safety in a land where no safety for civilians exists. A little girl frightened and alone in a car makes that call for help – only to die in the ambulance that came to her aid blown to pieces.

What is wrong with these people – faced with these atrocities day after day – yet they do nothing – not even condemn what is happening in Gaza quite the opposite they sanction it and send more and more weapons into the killing field?

No sanctions, no arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes at the ICC – not even support for South Africa in their case before the IC of J.
